As Director of Maternity Care for Hope for Home Ministries in Guatemala, I use my training as a Registered Nurse to manage prenatal care appointments, labour and delivery, and postpartum care for women from remote communities around Guatemala where there is little access to safe and professional medical services. I also work with local women in the village, training them to be providers of safe maternity care. Guatemala has one of the highest maternal and infant death rates in Central America. Many people are dying unnecessarily and simple education and health care can make a big impact to reduce those statistics.

In a culture where women are devalued and male machismo is dominant, childbirth provides unique access into women's lives. With such access, I can develop relationships and trust to speak to women about the Source of Life, Jesus and their destiny in Him. I welcome the presence of God into the room and take a stand against death. I am armed with the knowledge that God can take an earthly situation and turn it into a deeply spiritual one. I invite the Holy Spirit into the room through worship, and attune myself to the voice of the Great Physician and Healer. It is a privilege to be used by God in the physical realm of health care to accomplish His purposes in the spiritual realm.
