From the moment I first set foot in Uganda, in 2014, I felt God’s calling to this beautiful land. Early on, I recognized beyond the immediate financial instability youth in Uganda face, there was a desperate need for adults who encourage and speak life into the younger generations. I help manage Abundant Life Mentorship Ministries, a camping ministry that serves primary & secondary students in Jinja, Uganda. In one week overnight camps, students learn servant leadership, communication skills, faith-based sex-ed, and the love & hope of Jesus. More importantly, every student involved walks away having seen a real-life representation of the love of our Father. ALMM’s goal is for each student to feel valued and heard, given a safe place to ask questions about the issues they are facing in life. This is so different from the local cultural norms, and yet, so central to the example Jesus sets in scripture. In addition to camp, ALMM facilitates bible studies in these student’s villages, to further disciple our campers and help show them what it looks like to walk with Jesus.

My primary role is to mentor the leadership team of this ministry; doing life with these voluntary staff, hosting bible study dinners, ensuring the Gospel we teach is un-altered. Certified in the ‘Creating Positive Relationships’ sex-education program, I also train up local staff to teach this program in camp, and in their own communities. I also serve as an advisor to ALMM's recently hired local Ugandan Camp Director, coming alongside to train him on budgeting, communication with western donors, and administrative tasks, with the goal of placing the ministry fully in Ugandan hands one day. I feel my most important ministry here is fostering the development of the family Christ has built-in ALMM's local volunteers, representing the love of Jesus to those I serve with transparency, without judgment or conditions, and in a way that honors each individual’s value to the kingdom.

Just as Jesus focused on pouring into a few in powerful ways and sent them out to pour into others, Abundant Life Mentorship Ministries (ALMM) believes by intentionally pouring into the ones closest to us, we can reach many, many more. And by creating a powerful change in the youth of Jinja, we ultimately hope to create great change in Uganda as a whole. Corruption can be overcome. Churches can be transformed. Countries can be reclaimed for the Kingdom. God’s work here is not yet finished. Will you join us?
