Giving Them a Future (Christian Higher Education) - Sierra Leone, Africa

Giving Them a Future (Christian Higher Education) - Sierra Leone, Africa

Many of us have experienced the excitement of walking across a stage to receive a hard-earned degree—or have had the joy of watching a loved one receive honor as they complete their studies. In Sierra Leone, education can be hard to obtain, not to mention a Christian education.

During the early days of MissionGO’s educational work in Sierra Leone, I was approached by two young boys who came to us looking for books so they could read. They also asked, “Can we work for food and new sandals?” Over the years, others also grew to love these two boys and helped them attain a complete education. After attending this February’s leadership training session, these same two (now grown) men have begun a traveling evangelism team, visiting remote villages that are hard to reach! As they shook my hand, having received their certificates for completing the leadership course, I was struck by the reality that our ministry is graduating over 600 students each year from our Christian high schools. The Lord has blessed our efforts; we are seeing children turning into adults—pursuing evangelistic efforts after receiving a Christian education!

Sierra Leone’s overall education system faces many challenges. In crowded classrooms, there are too few qualified staff and insufficient IT and library facilities. These factors limit opportunities for young students. Early education is critical for children’s development because it directly impacts their future success. A strong foundation of learning, coupled with a Christian perspective of moral values and the Gospel, plays an essential role in shaping behaviors and decision-making that creates stronger futures for each student. This is why MissionGO finds it vital to provide primary and high-school learning.

After high school, MissionGO realizes that what is needed is a foundation and infrastructure to bridge these gaps and provide higher education that teaches Biblical Leadership. We must ensure that the facilities and technology are in place to support these college-level programs after their high-school graduation. Access to higher learning has a large impact—providing them with additional honed skills, earning potential to support themselves and their families, and personal growth opportunities needed to succeed in their chosen careers. Each year, we have hundreds of students graduate and go to various provinces throughout the country. These students become evangelists, teachers, church planters, nurses, and parents. Higher Christian education encourages them to become active and engaged members of their communities. We have pastors and educators willing to join us in elevating our current Bible teachers to become seminary-level instructors! In their numerous career paths, each student becomes an ambassador for Jesus Christ!

Currently,  our MissionGO high schools in Sierra Leone have 600 students graduating per year; if we capture only 10% into evangelism and pastoral training, that will allow us to launch 60 new church planters in all Sierra Leonian provinces within the coming years—individuals who already understand the country, tribal languages, and communities!

Meet Omar. Omar's family lived in poverty, struggling to make ends meet on a daily basis. Despite the odds stacked against him, Omar had a strong desire to attain an education so that he could help his family and improve their situation. Despite the challenges, Omar spent hours studying by candlelight, as his family could not afford electricity. He walked miles daily to get to the nearest school, where he often struggled to keep up with his classmates. Despite this, he persevered, and his hard work and determination paid off. With the help of MissionGO, Omar was able to continue his education and eventually graduated from high school.

In his senior year, Omar accepted Christ! His solid Christian education allowed him to begin to study the Bible more deeply than just the stories he had been told. He was then offered a scholarship to attend higher education, where he continued to excel academically. After completing his studies, Omar returned to his community and worked tirelessly to improve the lives of those around him. He started an outreach ministry, connecting young believers in the community. Now, he and his friends travel by motorbike to remote villages, sharing the Gospel he learned from the American missionaries at MissionGO. Omar is leading people to Christ and planting many small churches in remote villages along the roadside. This young man refused to give up on his dreams. Omar's story is a testament to a life changed by the Gospel, along with proper Christian education and the resilience of the human spirit. Although he faced incredible adversity, by God’s grace, he overcame his circumstances with a bright future ahead of him.

In addition to Christian higher education, we are focusing our efforts on training our graduates to become national pastors (just like Omar)! National pastors are better equipped to understand the cultural and social context of their communities. They can communicate the Gospel message in a way that is relevant and meaningful to locals and can bridge the gap between Christian beliefs and local customs and traditions. National pastors also serve as effective role models and leaders within their communities in a way that is authentic, relatable, and inspiring to others to live out their Christian faith! They help to build Christian communities and promote ministries with long-term sustainability! By empowering national pastors to lead, we can help create a lasting legacy of faith in provinces around the country.

I’m asking you to help MissionGO start a Christian Education Campaign to raise $75,000 over the next 24 months to support Christian higher education and church planting training programs. Will you join me in pledging these students solid Biblical advanced teaching to make more disciples across the nation? Let’s partner together and further God’s Kingdom by providing Christian higher education and training national pastors to create Christian communities! Help us build the next generation of strong Christian Sierra Leoneans to be evangelists, taking the Good News of Jesus Christ from their households to their communities, from their provinces to the uttermost parts of the earth!
