Lead Pastor
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Lead pastoral care of church members and weekly worship including preaching.
- Lead and co-coordinate outreach to the English-speaking international community of Lyon.
- Lead and maintain relationships between ICCL and other churches in the area.
- Lead Bible studies, one-to-one discipleship ministry and ministry outreach events.
- Lead the elders of the ICCL in the ministry to the church.
The pastor coordinates the life of the church, sees to the implementation of the decisions made by the church board, teaches and counsels all those who wish to benefit from his calling, and encourages the church in its vision and its obedience to God.
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE ROLE:
Pastoral heart and pastoral gifting to lead the ministry of a small but well-established multicultural, ethnically diverse, international, English-speaking church in Lyon, France.
Completion of either seminary or Bible college. Proven ability to preach and teach well in English.
Able to lead and multi-task fairly independently in a small international church setting.
Meets the biblical qualification of elder per Titus 1:5-9 and 1 Tim. 3:1-7.
“1 The saying is trustworthy: If anyone aspires to the office of overseer, he desires a noble task. 2 Therefore an overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, 3 not a drunkard, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. 4 He must manage his own household well, with all dignity keeping his children submissive, 5 for if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he care for God’s church? 6 He must not be a recent convert, or he may become puffed up with conceit and fall into the condemnation of the devil. 7 Moreover, he must be well thought of by outsiders, so that he may not fall into disgrace, into a snare of the devil.”
Titus 1:5-9:
“5 This is why I left you in Crete, so that you might put what remained into order, and appoint elders in every town as I directed you— 6 if anyone is above reproach, the husband of one wife, and his children are believers and not open to the charge of debauchery or insubordination. 7 For an overseer, as God’s steward, must be above reproach. He must not be
arrogant or quick-tempered or a drunkard or violent or greedy for gain, 8 but hospitable, a lover of good, self-controlled, upright,
holy, and disciplined. 9 He must hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to instruct in sound doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it.”
Furthermore, we believe that these qualifications imply that the pastor be male in gender.
The pastor is above all “A Man of the Word”. He is a teacher preparing God’s people for works of service so as to build up the body of Christ as found in Ephesians 4:11-14:
“11 And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, 12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, 13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, 14 so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes.”
HELPFUL QUALITIES:
Ability to speak French or willingness to learn the French language. Previous cross-cultural ministry experience.
