Radio Uhai

Broadcasting the Voice of Hope Across Tanzania

Meet the Missionaries: Deusdedit and Ezena Kanunu

Deusdedit (Deus) Kanunu and his wife, Ezena, are missionaries serving with MissionGO in Tabora, Tanzania. Together, they founded Radio Uhai, an Evangelical Christian radio station dedicated to sharing the Gospel with the Swahili-speaking people of the region.

The Vision and Mission

Radio Uhai’s mission is to promote spiritual growth, provide education, and foster community development through Christian faith-based programming. The ministry seeks to be a trusted voice of truth and a beacon of hope, broadcasting content that uplifts and inspires through the message of Jesus Christ.

The Calling: From Government Officer to Radio Founder

In 2012, while working as a government Human Resources Officer, Deus experienced a profound calling while walking the streets of Tabora. He felt a clear inner conviction to start a Christian radio station in the Muslim-dominated city to reach those who had never heard the Word of God.

Despite the risks, Deus and Ezena committed the vision to prayer. Two years later, God provided the means through an unexpected donor from the United States named Brian, who helped with registration, equipment, and the initial studio construction. Radio Uhai officially began broadcasting in 2017.

Why Radio Ministry Matters

In the Tabora region, many people—including Muslims and traditional believers—live in remote areas with limited access to clear biblical teaching. Radio allows the Gospel to:

  • Cross Barriers: A signal can quietly enter homes and reach individuals who may not feel safe asking spiritual questions publicly.
  • Reach the Isolated: For many, the radio is the first and only place they hear about Jesus Christ.
  • Discipline and Teach: It provides a lifeline for scattered believers who lack trained pastors or discipleship resources.

The Impact: Stories of Transformation

The ministry reaches the Nyamwezi people and many other tribes, as well as global listeners via online streaming and a mobile app.

  • A Secret Searcher: One young man from a traditional background called to say he listens to Radio Uhai late at night when others are asleep, as it is the only place he can learn about Jesus.
  • Juma’s Story: An older man named Juma, living in loneliness in a small village, found hope through a broadcast of Psalm 23. This "lifeline of faith" eventually led him to join a local church.

Current Project: Expanding the Reach

To reach thousands more who currently live outside the station's signal range, Radio Uhai is installing repeater stations in Urambo (west) and Nzega/Igunga (east).

  • Progress: Land has been purchased, and equipment houses have been built. Electricity is completed at the Nzega site.
  • Ongoing Work: Final installation of towers and equipment is planned for March 2025.

Current Needs & Partnership Opportunities

To complete this expansion and sustain daily operations, the ministry is seeking partners for the following:

Financial Needs

  • Monthly Operations ($2,200/month): Covers site security, internet, electricity, technical maintenance, and fuel.
  • One-Time Project ($3,870): To complete electricity installation at the Urambo repeater site.
  • Ministry Vehicle ($60,000): A reliable Land Cruiser Hardtop is needed to reach remote tower sites on steep, difficult terrain.

Prayer Requests

  • For the Ministry: That Swahili-speaking listeners will encounter Christ and that local churches will be strengthened.
  • For Provision: For the completion of the Urambo site and the necessary monthly support.
  • For the Family: For Deus and Ezena’s spiritual strength, wisdom, and protection as they lead this mission.

"Together, we can ensure that the light of the Gospel continues reaching people who may otherwise never hear the Good News."

GAP STUDENTS

Supporting a gap year student is an investment in a young person stepping boldly into the world to grow, serve, and discover their calling. During a gap year, students gain real‑world experience, develop maturity, and engage in meaningful work. As they serve, they deepen their relationship with God, seek His direction, and better understand the unique purpose He has for their lives.
